Ministers Island is an historic island in Passamaquoddy Bay near the town of St. Andrews, NB. The 490-acre island stands several hundred yards offshore and is accessible at low tide by a wide gravel bar suitable for vehicle travel.
The Island became famous in the late 1800s as the summer home of Sir William Van Horne, then president of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Van Horne transformed the island into a small Xanadu, sporting a sandstone mansion, Covenhoven, furnished in the most lavish late Edwardian manner. The house has 50 rooms, 17 of which are bedrooms, 11 are bathrooms and there are 11 fireplaces.
Additional developments included a livestock barn, greenhouse, windmill pump, carriage house, creamery, a bathhouse that led to the shore and much more.
